Something New - Bansko
Although in the last few years Bulgaria has become popular mainly as a sun holiday destination, the Balkan country also prides itself for its winter holiday resorts. The top of the range winter destinations in Bulgaria are Pamporovo, Borovetz and Bansko. However, if you are in it for the skiing, the choice is obvious.
Bansko is the top Bulgarian ski resort. The small town in the Pirin Mountain, boasts modern skiing facilities, excellent snow quality and a very long ski season. Skiing takes place in Bansko from early December to late May every year. The small town is situated near the banks of the river Glazne, right under the highest and most beautiful part of the Pirin Mountain. Bansko is 160 km away from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, where you will find the nearest airport. The altitude of the town is 1000 meters and the ski zone is at 2000 – 2600 meters. It takes around 25 minutes on the lift to reach the skiing zone. Last time I checked, which was right before Christmas, the daily price for the lift was 50 lev (around 26 euro). The tickets for the lift would typically account for the biggest part of your expenses. You can choose from a wide range of accommodation to suit any budget and also the prices in restaurants and bars are quite affordable. A recent attraction that most skiers readily indulge in is the skiing equipment customizing shop. You can print your name or put custom signs and pictures on your pair of skis to add style to your performance. Go for Bansko, you will not regret it.
